The heart's electromagnetic field is real. Here is what it means.

Your heart broadcasts a measurable electromagnetic field.
Not metaphorically. Not poetically. Measurably β with a magnetometer, in a lab, by anyone with the right equipment. The field of the human heart is roughly five thousand times stronger than the field of the brain. It can be detected several feet from the body. And what it carries is what other nervous systems pick up first.
This is not new information. The HeartMath Institute has been documenting this work since the early 1990s. The science is in peer-reviewed journals. The mechanism is reproducible. The implications are still being worked out.
I want to walk you through what the research actually shows, because the implications matter for how you carry yourself through the world β and for why the people closest to you respond to what is happening underneath your behaviour before they ever respond to the behaviour itself.
What the measurements show
The heart produces an electrical signal large enough to be detected by an electrocardiogram from electrodes placed on the surface of the skin. That signal also produces a magnetic field, which can be detected by a magnetocardiogram β a sensitive magnetometer placed outside the body.
McCraty and the HeartMath team have measured this field at distances of three to four feet from the body using standard equipment. With more sensitive instruments, the field can be detected further.
This is the part that is not in dispute. The heart is electromagnetically loud, in a way that the brain is not.
What the field carries
This is where it gets interesting.
The heart's rhythm is not metronomic. The interval between heartbeats varies constantly β even at rest, even in healthy people. This variation is called heart rate variability (HRV), and the pattern of the variation carries information.
When the body is in a state of stress, the HRV pattern is jagged, chaotic, irregular β what the HeartMath researchers call "incoherent." When the body is in a state of regulated, connected presence β the kind of state you might feel sitting quietly with someone you love β the HRV pattern becomes smooth, rhythmic, ordered. They call this "coherent."
The electromagnetic field of the heart carries the signature of this coherence state. A coherent heart produces a coherent field. An incoherent heart produces a chaotic one.
And here is the part that changes how you think about being around other people: another nervous system can pick up the difference.
The two-body studies
The HeartMath team and other research groups have run a series of experiments where two people sit in close proximity, each wearing equipment that measures their own ECG and the EEG of the person across from them. The signal of one person's heart shows up in the other person's brainwave readings.
Not metaphorically. Measurably.
When the two people are coherent β when their heart rhythms are smooth and ordered β the signal transfers more strongly. When the two people are emotionally connected, the signal becomes more synchronised across both bodies. The hearts begin to entrain to each other.
This is the mechanism underneath what we casually call "energy" between two people. It is not energy in the metaphysical sense. It is electromagnetic information, broadcast by one heart, picked up by another.
The signature you are broadcasting is not metaphorical. It is electromagnetic, and it can be measured several feet from the body.
What this means for your daily life
Three implications worth sitting with.
One β Your inner state precedes your words.
When you walk into a room, your nervous system has already broadcast its state into the room before you have said anything. The people in the room have already begun to entrain to whatever coherence or incoherence your heart is carrying. Their bodies have already responded.
This is why you can feel the moment someone enters a meeting holding tension. It is not subtle social cue reading. It is electromagnetic. Their heart's field has reached your nervous system before they sat down.
It is also why the cliche of "people can tell when you are not OK, even when you say you are" is not perception. It is biology. Your heart is telling them what your mouth is denying. The mouth does not win.
Two β Coherence is contagious.
The same mechanism that lets your incoherence affect a room lets your coherence affect it. When you sit with someone in a regulated, heart-coherent state, the field you are broadcasting actively supports their nervous system in moving toward the same state.
This is part of why being in the presence of someone who is genuinely regulated β a meditator, a long-practising therapist, an elder β is itself regulating. The mechanism is not their wisdom. It is their field.
It is also why the most important contribution you can make to the people you love is not your advice. It is the state you are in when you are with them.
Three β Coherence can be trained.
This is the part HeartMath built their entire research programme around. Coherence is not a fixed trait. It is a state, and it can be entered on demand with practice. The protocol they developed β called Quick Coherence β is three steps, takes ninety seconds, and produces a measurable HRV shift in most people on the first try.
The three steps are these. Bring your attention to the area around your heart. Slow your breath to roughly six breaths per minute β five seconds in, five seconds out. Recall a feeling of genuine appreciation or care β not a thought about it, the felt sense of it.
That is the entire protocol. Done with attention, it shifts the heart from incoherent to coherent within one to two minutes. The shift is measurable on equipment, and it is detectable by other people in the room within seconds after that.
Why the framework leans here
The heart's field is one of the two foundational mechanisms underneath the entire framework I teach. The other is memory reconsolidation. Together they form the architecture of how a single nervous system rewires itself, and how that rewiring spreads to the nervous systems closest to it.
Module 2 of The Installation is the heart-coherence work. It comes early in the arc because every protocol that follows depends on the body being able to enter a coherent state on demand. Without it, the reconsolidation work of Module 5 lands shallower. With it, the work lands at depth.
